The 3rd model Yamaha produced of their 650cc twin was the XS2.
It was marketed in the US in 1972.
I sold my R3 to get one and rode it for 5 years.
Improvements for this model were the addition of electric start, front disc brake and improved handling.
I had the engine heads ported and polished, and the crank trued and
balanced, the carbs were dialed in after I modified the intake and exhaust.

the first thing I added
Since all my buddies had modified their bikes I did my XS2.
The front forks were extended 8" and the handlebars replaced with ape hangers.
I also added highway pegs and extended the kick stand.
This is the only pic of my XS2 in its final form before I sold it in 1977.
It was highly modified.
I added TT pipes, K&N air filters, a Bates headlight, Koni rear shocks and painted the engine barrels and front disc caliper black.
The tank and side covers were at the paint shop when this was taken.
I had borrowed a friend's XS1 tank so I could still ride.
It was a very quick bike, and I sold it to a Triumph Bonneville T120 rider who was tired of watching my tail light disappear in the distance!
